Podcasts are great! Here are a few to know

September 30 is International Podcast Day, so we wanted to highlight a few that we enjoy. If you have never heard of a podcast or you want to learn more, read below! Podcasts have been around since the early-2000's as a way to produce radio-style shows in a format where people can listen to them on their own time and from anywhere. The first podcasts were delivered to the public on the internet with the first-known podcast named The BackStage Pass giving people the chance to hear interviews at their own leisure with well-known artists such as B.B. King and The Beach Boys. Since then, smartphones now have apps that combine all podcasts in one place for people to listen from their phones. They can be played while in the house, driving in the car or while on the computer. The purpose of them is to give people a more personalized experience and provide a convenient way to listen to the...

Remembering 9/11, 20 years later

Remembering 9/11, 20 years later

“No day shall erase you from the memory of time.”- Virgil Those are the words etched on the walls of the September 11 Memorial Museum in steel recovered from the Twin Towers. Twenty years ago, our nation suffered a horrific attack in New York City at the World Trade Center site and at the Pentagon, on September 11, 2001. In a terror attack aimed at the symbols of America’s power and prosperity, 2,977 people were killed and over 6,000 were injured. There were no survivors on the hijacked planes and only 20 survivors were pulled out of the flaming rubble. The tragedy is one of the largest losses of life due to a foreign attack on American soil, as well as the greatest loss of rescue personnel (in one incident) in American history. There was nothing more shocking than that dark day in history. Everyone remembers exactly where they were and how they felt that day. It was a heartbreaking time but...

Remember, OurSeniors.org is a nonprofit!

Remember, OurSeniors.org is a nonprofit!

Founded five years ago, OurSeniors.org was started out of inspiration from a retired nurse that visited nursing homes and spoke words from the Bible to provide comfort to those living there. The OurSeniors.net team got involved by gathering gifts, blankets, jackets, stuffed animals and cookies to make them feel cared for. This has continued for many years and this past Christmas, the team took over 200 blankets and gifts along with over 500 cookies made by our friend and featured Amazing Senior, Barbara Andersen. Less than 5 percent of all nursing homes, rehabs and assisted living facilities are able to receive visitors, which can be difficult for seniors that wish to interact with their families or friends. While facilities try their best to care for residents, they are not able to spend all their time on any one person at a time. This leaves room for feelings of abandonment and resentfulness. OurSeniors.org tries to change this by visiting seniors in facilities...

It’s National Sons and Daughters Day – Reach out to your kids/grandkids!

Whether your family is small or large, lives close or far, today is a great day to reach out to your kids and grandkids. With each passing day, time flies by and before you know it, the grandkids are graduating college, getting married and you have great-grandkids! Connecting with family members can be a bit of work now and then, especially when the holidays are a few months away and there’s not much of a reason to talk other than to schedule upcoming plans. Sometimes, it’s easier to use a birthday or anniversary as an excuse to strike up a conversation. We think that right now (while it’s still summer) is a great time to reach out. Ask about any recent vacations, try to share photos of fun things that have been happening and see about future vacations or plans so you can feel more a part of their lives....
