A Big “Thank You” to the City of Daytona Beach Leisure Services Department!

City of Daytona Beach

City of Daytona BeachThere is no doubt that the state of Florida is the most senior-friendly place in the United States! Seniors themselves have confirmed this fact by voting with their feet and making Florida into America’s Senior State. Why?
One big reason is the welcoming attitude that the cities and towns of this state have extended to our seniors. There is no better example of this welcoming attitude than the City of Daytona Beach Leisure Services Department. These good people work hard to serve all the citizens of the Daytona area, but right now we are concentrating on their programs aimed especially at seniors. A great place to see some of these senior and 55+ services is at the OurSeniors.net webpage dedicated to the Leisure Services Department. Just click on City of Daytona Leisure Services and you will see for yourself.
The slider at the top of the page will tell you about the many programs designed to keep seniors active, engaged and healthy. Ballroom Dancing, Hula, Arts & Crafts, Cardio Drumming, a Writers’ Group, Senior Exercising (aka ‘Seniorcise’) and the Yoga program are just a few of the programs that the Leisure Department has for our 55+ and senior friends. Take time to check out the Senior Oasis Program. This unique activity gives our seniors an opportunity to attend a luncheon and take a small field trip on the third Thursday of each month.
The Leisure Services Department has four recreation centers:

  • John H. Dickerson Community Center at 308 South Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd
  • Midtown Cultural and Educational Center 925 George W. Engram Blvd
  • Peggy Schnebly Recreation Center 1101 North Atlantic Ave
  • Yvonne Scarlett Golden Cultural and Educational Center at 1000 Vine St

They all provide programs and activities for all ages but especially for our seniors.  The Schnebly Recreation Center, (Driving Directions Here) has exercise classes specifically for seniors, a monthly luncheon & field trip, a fitness room, game room, quilting, arts & crafts, and even more indoor activities. They have outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, and two new pickleball courts for everyone’s enjoyment! If you do not know what pickleball is, check it out. This sport combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis – great for seniors and 55+ adults to keep fit!
