Do Not Forget to Vote!

cast your vote

voteTomorrow, August 28th, is primary election day in Florida. The candidates who win tomorrow’s Republican and Democratic primary elections will be on the ballot in November, and they will be the only people with a realistic chance to win the general election. Obviously, this makes the August 28 primary a very important day.
If past history is any guide, tomorrow’s election turnout will not reflect its huge importance. The last “off-year” primary (a year in which there is no presidential race) saw only 18% of Florida voters bother to cast a ballot. Less than 1 in 5 registered voters determined who had a chance to become Florida’s governor, a member of the Florida cabinet or a Representative in the United States Congress. This disappointing turnout in 2014 is typical of off-year elections in Florida and other states as well. In 1956, 66% of Florida’s registered voters turned out to vote in the primaries, but the trend has been down for over 60 years!
Statewide, Democrats and Republicans will choose candidates for the United States Senate and for important state offices like Governor, Attorney General and Agriculture Commissioner. OurSeniors.net is based in central and east-central Florida where important races are shaping up for local offices, as well as for seats in the United States Congress. These local, state and federal office holders will determine the directions taken by your government in the coming years.
It is popular to remind people that it is their duty, as good citizens, to vote. That is true, but it is also in your self-interest to make your feelings known to elected officials. They are the ones who are going to set your tax rates, make the zoning laws, make rules for Social Security and Medicare and conserve or waste Florida’s environment. Not voting means that you are giving up your say in these important matters, so go and vote!
If you are registered, all you have to do is to show up at the polling place for your voting precinct. If you are not sure of your voting status or the polling place location, go to MyFloridaelections.com (the Florida division of elections) enter your name and birthday and you should get the information. Voting should be an important part of senior living and the senior lifestyle, just as it is for all American citizens.
Here’s a great idea: tomorrow, go and vote and then pick up a copy of the Summer Edition of OurSeniors.net Magazine. Click to see a list of magazine locations-
