Aging African Americans

Nurse assisted senior with walkerDid you know that African American seniors are living longer? The death rate of African- American adults aged 65 and older has dropped 25% in the past 17 years. Death rate disparities are narrowing between African Americans and Anglo-Saxon Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, the death rate for African Americans is still much higher. These numbers are caused by social and economic conditions that are more common in the African-American community. Lower levels of education or living near the poverty line diminish access to healthcare for individuals. All seniors deserve access to healthcare and opportunities that will lead to happy aging. There is still much work to be done to reach equality but being aware of these differences is the first step. You can help break down these barriers by supporting programs like REACH, which help reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. This topic deserves recognition every month, not just in February. Please do your due diligence and stay aware of companies and politicians who support all of our seniors. Every American deserves the best quality of life possible. From our team at OurSeniors.net happy Black history month!
