OurSeniors.Net Celebrates Labor Day

Labor Day has a special hold upon the hearts of most Americans. It is a day that commemorates the nation’s strength, prosperity, and dedication toward a future for generations. Before it became a federal holiday, labor activists and others across the country held local celebrations to recognize the contributions of workers and the strength of numbers.

Labor Day Origins and Traditions

In the U.S., Labor Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Monday in September and lends itself to a three-day weekend many begin to associate with a sign that the year is coming to an end. Although many people consider this day to signify the end of Summer, it is an arbitrary date that has nothing to do with Summer or Autumn at all.

Labor Day recognizes the American Labor Movement that started in the late 19th century as trade unions grew to celebrate labor. Unions were pivotal in creating many worker rights we are still familiar with today, including eight-hour workdays, vacation and sick days, and overtime pay. Oregon was the first state in the U.S. to make it an official holiday and by 1894 it became an official federal holiday.

Today, Labor Day is marked with parades, picnics, parties, and fireworks. It is a time when people come together for various fun outdoor activities which slowed down in recent years due to the pandemic. But now that most restrictions on public gatherings and large group events have been lifted, people are again excited about the hard work citizens have made to make America great.

Why Not Host a BBQ This Year?
In most places throughout the U.S. the weather is still warm (if not hot), and people are still glad to spend time outside. BBQs are easy to set up and are great for bringing people together to reminisce, catch up, and look toward the future. Lawn games, crafts, and water features are always popular forms of entertainment for friends and family. Just be sure to have plenty of water and beverages at hand.

If you’re not somebody who likes to host a gathering, you might just want to relax and enjoy the day. Remember, the holiday was created to recognize the hard work that we have all done in building this great nation and the day reminds us that we all need a break from work. Put your feet up and enjoy the time you have earned by contributing to our society.

Why Can’t I Wear White After Labor Day?

One of the quirkiest unofficial fashion rules tied to Labor Day is that people should “retire” the color white from their wardrobe. This can be traced back to the early 1900s when the old money rich were trying desperately to separate themselves from the nouveau rich.

Those who could afford to travel during the fall and winter months wore white on their vacations as a sign of leisure. Others who stayed in city centers generally wore dark clothing (e.g., winter coats) as they carried on with their lives.

In a more practical sense, once Labor Day became an official federal holiday, not wearing white became a popular reminder to the imagination that it was time to switch out their light warm weather linens with thicker and darker fabrics to keep the heat indoors.
