You may wonder, What does the history and future of America have to do with me? The truth is, more than you may realize. I’ve heard it said that when America sneezes, the world catches a cold. And whether you live in the United States or somewhere else, what happens here can have an impact around the world.
That’s one reason this year’s Summer Family Bible Conference was so powerful. We had incredible speakers join us—David Barton, Bishop E. W. Jackson, Bill Federer, Alex McFarland, former Congressman Bob McEwen, Chad Connelly, and Richard Harris—and they shared things that opened my eyes to the way God has worked throughout this nation’s history.
What You Don’t Know Could Keep You from What God Wants You to See
One thing that stood out throughout the conference was the importance of not just having beliefs but understanding the foundation behind them. The Bible makes it clear that knowledge matters.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
Hosea 4:6
David Barton challenged some of the popular ideas repeated about America—that our Founders were not men of faith and that the Constitution was a godless document. He brought out things about our history that many people have never heard before.
David’s message wasn’t just about history. It was about helping believers understand why they believe what they believe. Because there’s a big difference between having an opinion and having a foundation.
Seeing God’s Hand Through History
If I were to ask you to explain how we got where we are today, would you be able to? I don’t believe most people could. That’s why it’s so important to understand history. If you don’t, you’re vulnerable to believing whatever version of events someone wants to tell you. History is not just a bunch of dates and names. It shows God’s hand working through generations.
What Bill Federer shared about America’s founding, the principles that shaped our nation, and the events that followed was incredible. He brought attention to things that help explain why America developed differently than other nations.
Bob McEwen helped connect the dots between history and what’s happening in our world today. He showed how decisions made decades ago still affect nations, cultures, and the challenges we face right now.
You know, if you don’t understand history, you’re like a person who wakes up every morning with no memory of what happened yesterday. You’re just reacting to things without understanding why they are the way they are.
That’s why this conference was so important. Because you can’t fix what you don’t understand.
God Can Redeem What Looks Impossible
We also heard from Chad Connelly. His testimony is powerful. He and his wife, Dana, have both walked through some painful things. They both lost a spouse to suicide, and that kind of loss is something most people can’t even imagine.
But he didn’t let that tragedy define him. He allowed God to heal him, restore him, and use those experiences to bring hope to other people. Today, Chad is full of joy, serving the Lord, and making a difference.
I don’t have space here to share what Alex McFarland, Richard Harris, and Bishop E. W. Jackson brought to the conference, but each one added important perspectives. They encouraged us to stand on biblical truth in every area of life.
As mentioned earlier, I’m not saying America is perfect. We have problems just like any other nation. But America has been greatly maligned, and there are many people who don’t understand the good things that God has done through this nation.
