Did you know that Hurricane Season begins on June 1st and ends November 30th. While 97% of tropical cyclone activity happens during this period, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says some storms can form before and after those dates.
The most active period of Hurricane Season is typically mid-August to mid-October.
If you haven’t already prepared yourself for the season, be mindful and stock up on essentials like: First Aid Kit, Water, Non-Perishable Food, Weather Radio, Flashlights, Extra Batteries, Blankets, and Sanitation Supplies.
Should your home sustain damage be aware of HOME REPAIR SCAMS.
RED FLAGS:
- Unsolicited Offers: Someone knocks on your door and offers repairs. These individuals often claim that they are working in the neighborhood.
- High-Pressure Tactics: They will try and push you to make a quick decision to say that the deal is only for today.
- Upfront Payment Demands: Scammers often ask for full money up front or a very large deposit before beginning the work – they then often disappear. Think first: Do you pay for your hair to be done before getting it cut at the salon?
- No Written Contract: Scammers will avoid providing you with a written estimate or contract.
- Lack of Credentials: The supposed Contractor can’t provide you with a valid license, insurance or references. Remember: Even in an emergency, do you own due diligence. Search State and County Records to verify the validity of a Contractor.
- Unmarked Vehicles or No Business Address: Legitimate contractors will usually have their vehicles branded and have a physical business location.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
- Get Multiple Estimates: Compare at least 3 bids from licensed contractors.
- Use Written Contracts: Review and ensure all work, costs and timelines are clearly documented.
- Avoid Cash Payments: Pay by checks or credit cards for a paper trail.
- Don’t Pay in Full Upfront: A reasonable deposit between 10%-30% is generally paid in advance. Do Not pay in full until the job is completed.
STEPS TO FIND A RELIABLE CONTRACTOR:
- Ask family and friends for recommendations on the type of repairs that need to be done. Many local hardware stores or building supply centers can be a resource and often know reputable contractors.
- Be sure to check online reviews and sites like: Better Business Bureau (BBB), Yelp, HomeAdvisor etc.
- Trust your instincts. Scammers take advantage of you when you are vulnerable. If something feels off – walk away.
